Informing Families and The Washington State Developmental Disabilities Council Community Summit Session Summaries
The Washington State Developmental Disabilities Council (WADDC) was proud to be a participant and sponsor in this year’s Community Summit, continuing its mission to support inclusive communities and elevate the voices of people with developmental disabilities and their families. The WADDC works promote policies and practices that improve the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). One of our projects, the Informing Families project, provides clear, accessible information and resources to individuals with I/DD and their families to help them navigate services, plan for the future, and stay connected to their communities. Through its presence at the Summit, the Council helped foster meaningful conversations around equity, support, and inclusion in two different sessions.
Session 1 Overview:
The first breakout session was a guided conversation focused on the biggest issues currently affecting people with I/DD in Washington State. Using data from a recent statewide survey, the group looked closely at three key areas: creating more services and supports, improving access to information and education, and increasing the overall quality of services. The session was led by individuals with lived experience, who shared their stories and helped shape the conversation. Participants left with a better understanding of the challenges, ideas for solutions, and a stronger sense of connection and purpose moving forward.

Session 2 Overview:
The second breakout session focused on the future of the I/DD community in Washington State. It was an interactive conversation where participants reflected on the past and looked ahead to what’s next. Guided by speakers and supported by a Graphic Facilitator, the session began with a brief history of the I/DD community and the progress made over time. From there, the group shifted into envisioning the future, discussing ways to reduce barriers, strengthen supports, and create more inclusive communities. Key takeaways included a deeper understanding of the community’s journey, ideas for continued improvement, and clear action steps participants could take moving forward.
